Linda and I had a great visit with our son, Travis and his wife, Linda Lee. It was a great weekend.

I came back to a hard week at work. Lots to do and not enough time to do it all. I am glad it’s Friday. Tomorrow my welder friend and I are working on the hunting car again. We will finish it someday????

Q&A, Comments and Suggestions (Video)

From Ana: In your article about backing up files, you indicate we can use Mozy.com up to 2.0GB of files. How do I
determine how much space my files are taking up, and
how do I determine how much space my computer even
has?

Also, does online backup mean if this computer
crashes, I can access my files online from either a
new computer or this one cleaned up, and recopy
everything to the desktop/hard drive?

Ana, great questions.

Let’s look at how to tell how much disc you may have to back up. I am assuming that you are running windows. If you go into Windows Explorer (Right click on the Start button on the lower left of your screen and the select Explore on the dropdown box) and go to My Documents where I am assuming most of your files are located, right click on the My Documents icon and select Properties from the dropdown box. Click the General Tab and you will see how much space is in My Documents. If you have additional files in other locations right click on them and follow the same procedure to add up all the space your back up will need.

Note: Mozy will run on your computer and analyze your hard drive and let you know ahead of the backup how much space you will need.

As far as how much space is in your computer….To determine how much disc storage you have, use Windows Explorer, highlight the hard drive disc letter (usually C: but not always). Right click the icon for the drive and select Properties. You will see how much disc space you have used and how much is available and what the total combined space you have on your drive.

If you want to know how much RAM (random access memory) your computer has, click Start and then select Control Panel. On the control panel select System. The main System page will display your operating system, the processor speed and how much RAM is in your computer.

Question: If you back up with Mozy, you can download and recreate all the files on any computer. The dialog box for Mozy has a button “Restore Files” and this will download the files from the online storage to the hard drive you specify.

Mozy limits how many restores per month are allowed since it is a back up site and not a file sharing site.

Author’s Note: I check Mozy each day and it has backed up all changed files sometime during the night. Mozy tells me the last time the files were backed up and it is usually only a few hours ago. Once you get past the initial backup, the incremental backups are painless.

Copyrights

A couple of weeks ago, Sue asked for an article about copyrights. Well, Sue, here it is.

The basis for copyright law in the USA is found in the United States Constitution in Article 1, Section 8, Clause 8 as follows:

To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.

The first copyright law was the Copyright Act of 1790. We are currently operating under the Copyright of 1976 as amended.

Copyrights have a term of the life of the author plus 70 years. We Boomers can thank Sonny Bono (Sonny and Cher) for this. The Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998—alternatively known as the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act set the current term of copyrights.

When you write original content, it is copyrighted even if you do not specify “Copyright” or use the “circle C” © copyright symbol.

However, it is best to declare your works are copyrighted. The proper way to do this is “Copyright © (Date of first Creation) ( Name of author).

The best way to approach using any information that you have not created yourself is to consider that it is copyrighted.

To copyright an item, you must establish a dated record of some type when you first created the item so you can prove the date of the copyright if someone challenges you. The earliest date will get the copyright. Before computers, a technique was to write the piece and have it notarized or witnessed. Another technique was to enclose the item in an envelope and mail it to yourself. The postmark established the date.

Now we have computers that record the date of file creation for anything we record on them. This date becomes the date of the copyright.

All you have to do to copyright something is to create it and follow the previously specified procedure by specifying “Copyright © (Date of first Creation) ( Name of author)” Use of the copyright symbol is not required. The following procedure is for MS Word: To insert the copyright symbol, click Insert on the tool bar, Click Symbol on the dropdown and you will be presented a table of all kinds of symbols. Highlight the “circle C” and click the Insert button and the © will appear where your cursor is located. You will have to click on the Close button to close the Symbol box.

There, that was easy. Now start creating content on which you can proudly hang that “circle C”.

Snag It

Last week, we discussed how to do a screen print of what you were viewing on the screen. This is a quick and dirty way of printing the screen. However, it is included in your operating system so there is no additional cost for the feature.

A better way (costs $39.95) is to use the software package, Snag It. This is a very handy package that has many more features than the screen print. You need to evaluate what you need for your particular requirements.

Snag It is from Techsmith, the same company that makes Camtasia. Some of the neat features of Snag It are it will capture the entire window, not just the part of the window that is visible on the screen. When you tell Snag It to capture, it will start at the top of the window and scroll down to the bottom during the capture.

As soon as the capture is complete, the captured data is presented in an edit screen where you can save the entire image, or cut out a particular piece to save or to print. The editor has other editing tools for editing the capture.

We purchased Snag It in a package deal when we purchased Camtasia ($20.00 extra). I have already used it several times. I used it to capture and print the keyword table for the Google Adwords campaign that we are setting up to promote the Boomer Guru videos. If I had used screen print, I would get a lot of the page that I did not need. With Snag It I cut out the table and printed it.

I also used it to prepare a shot for the video that we are producing on how to remotely access your Window XP computer for no additional cost (other than the cost of the XP operating system).

This is not for everyone, but for some it will be a very handy tool to have. You can check it out at
http://www.techsmith.com/snagit.asp. There is a 30 day free trial if you want to play with it to see if it might help you.

Rentacoder

This is a really cool site. I have used eLance.com for several projects, but I had never used Rentacoder.com. (For previous Boomer eZine article about eLance go to
http://www.boomer-ezine.com/V1I6_052006.htm.

It is more difficult to register on Rentacoder than on eLance. Apparently, Rentacoder has been burned by credit card fraud so you must take additional steps to validate your card for payment. I signed up and went though the validation process which consisted of the usual completion of the sign up form, setting up your credit card as the payment method, scanning or faxing both sides of the card to Rentacoder, and then receiving a phone call from Rentacoder validating the card. This all was handled quickly and efficiently.

I had a project on which I needed help and in my opinion, the project should not cost more than $25.00 USD. The minimum project on eLance is $100.00 so I opted to try Rentacoder. I was pleasantly surprised.

Let’s talk about the scope of the Rentacoder project. The Internet allows you to pass parameters from one web page to another in the URL. If you see a URL containing a question mark (?) followed by characters, the information after the question mark is the parameter data. An example is

This link is to the form on Boomer Guru where the viewer is sent at the end of any BG video. The form asks the viewer for suggestions for improvement on the video. Since this is a general purpose form for all videos, the form needs to know which video the viewer just watched.
The video number is passed as a parameter after the question mark (?). In this case it is ?value=BGV6100602. I passed the parameter to the form with no difficulty, but I did not know the Java code to put it in the input form to send to the ASK database. I needed professional help so I turned to Rentacoder.

From the time that I made the decision to use Rentacoder until I had the finished code was an elapsed time of five hours at a cost of $5.00 USD.

I need a script written to take the parameter passed to a web page in the URL and put it in the value= field for a hidden field in a form.

I downloaded code to the site to extract the parameter, but I do not know how to put the parameter in the value field so it can be passed to the database.

The location in the HTML where the data needs to be placed is indicated by Video_Number_Goes_Here.

End of Job Posting.

I received several bids in the $25.00 range without any additional communication. The winning bid was a young man from India who went to the web page on which I needed the help. He copied that web page to his website, modified it to include the features that I wanted, and then sent me an email with the link to the modified page on his website asking if that was what I was trying to accomplish.

I was able to test the code and use View Source on the page to see his technique. He was smart not to totally complete the job since that is against Rentacoder rules and a dishonest buyer could just copy his code and not pay him.

He still had not bid on the job. I replied that he had created what I was seeking. He then entered a bid of $5.00 which I accepted.

I left him very good feedback and we are both happy. I will definitely use Rentacoder again for help with the technical details that are beyond my capability (and there are a lot of them).

I recommend that you consider Rentacoder for any project on which you need help. There are many capable programmers available through the Internet who can help you at a very reasonable price.

Did you know that I speak Volkswagen? I am a quail hunter and in South Texas, every serious quail hunter has a hunting car or truck. Mine is made from a VW bus. My original VW hunting car, the Quailmobile, broke apart after 25 years. I bought a 1970 VW bus body to build the Quailmobile II using all the knowledge I gained from patching the old one for 25 years. (It had a lot of burned welding rod on it).

On top of all the work at my day job and my online job, I am trying to get this finished for hunting season this year, and I am running out of time. I have posted a couple of pictures of me working on it. It is lying on its side so my helper and I can weld the steel support in place on the underside without having to lie on our backs and have welding sparks falling in our faces. I will probably write more on it for those who are curious about it. I will post a picture of the final product. It is a one of a kind vehicle and it is fun.

A few years ago, for a project (I seem to have too many of them), I rebuilt a VW Thing. It took five years to complete since it involved taking it apart screw by screw and then putting it back together. We used it for a few years and when our children did not need the transportation anymore, we sold it. It was fun, but I will not undertake a project of that magnitude again.

Linda and I are flying to Dallas this week end on our company plane (Southwest Airlines) to visit our son, Travis, and his lovely, talented wife, Linda Lee. Since I am married to a Linda and he is too, we tagged our daughter-in-law with her middle name so we would not get the Lindas mixed up. Travis turns 31 next week and we are having a birthday celebration for him. They have tickets for us to go to the Plano Symphony. Linda and I will really enjoy this. Kingsville does not have this available, and we consider this a real treat.

Q & A, Suggestions and Comments

Tim Know, one of our mentors, made the suggestion that we not use a full page for the width of the Boomer Video eZine. He suggested setting up a 700 pixel wide table on the page and put all the text inside that table.

We tried his suggestion and it makes a world of difference in the readability of the page. We hope that you think the same.

Follow up on eBay Feedback

In the last issue we discussed the need to achieve positive feedback for ten or more transactions to be creditable on eBay. I want to share with you the feedback generation for 10-17-06. I logged on eBay and searched for ebooks for $.99. There were 1,688 available. I bought the following. A cookbook with 11,000 recipes for Linda, Every Book on eBay plus resale rights to 1000’s more, Be Your Own Boss plus resale rights, Instant Affiliate Link Masker software, and 100 Feedback in Seven Days (I need to read this).

For fun I searched on ebooks for $.01 and found 678 ebooks for $.01. I bought one of these on How to Sell Books on eBay.

A friend who is a Boomer Video eZine subscriber bought one of the videos, and I bought one so as of 10/17/06 I have eight transactions and I am waiting for the feedback on them. I am still waiting for my children to buy the videos. At this rate, I guess I will have to cut them out of the will.

Ebooks are good items to buy for feedback. They are inexpensive. They are delivered immediately so you do not have to wait a week for shipping before leaving feedback. You can leave feedback in a few minutes after the purchase and if the seller is on the ball, he/she will leave feedback quickly.

Author’s Note: I just took time to read the “100 Feedback in Seven Days”. It is a seven page book that says to search for items for $.01 that are “Buy It Now” information products with no shipping cost. Buy 100 of these whether you need them or not, leave positive feedback and in one week you will have 100 transactions with positive feedback for the total price of $1.00.

I was looking for more value so I started at $.99 for the items for which I was searching. However, for building feedback, the $.01 item with no shipping cost is the way to go.

ASK Database

When I set up the Boomer Guru site for selling videos, I wanted to get feedback at the end of video so I could determine if there was something outdated in the video or get any suggestions for improvement. I also wanted to collect any suggestions for a new topic for a video.

After checking around on what was available, I settled on ASK Database. This is an amazing site that will handle the task of setting up forms to collect information and provide tools to help you analyze the information.

When you join ASK, you can set up various types of question formats and it generates the HTML code for you to copy into your web page for the form. When the reader completes the form, the data is logged into the ASK database and is available for you to read or analyze.

I have used ASK to set up a suggestion form for Boomer Video eZine at
http://www.boomer-ezine.com/Suggestion_Form1.htm. I would really appreciate your going there and leaving your suggestions or comments. This will help us improve the eZine and will also debug the website.

You will get a “Thank You” page after leaving your suggestion. This is a custom Boomer Video eZine page If you did not want to make your own page, ASK has a default thank you page.

ASK has a 21 day free trial and then it costs $19.95 per month for the silver membership and $29.95 for the gold membership. This is not cheap for the starting entrepreneur. The cost of this service makes this one of those tough decisions. Will my site grow so the cost per response and the data collected justify the cost? Our decision is “yes”. This will be an invaluable tool for improving the quality of this site and other sites that we manage.

Back Up Your Computer Hard Drive

What is your backup procedure? I REALLY hope you have one. Most people back up to some type of media, but then store the media next to the computer. This takes care of the hard drive crash, but it does nothing about the house burning down along with the computer and the backup.

As we have expanded our online business, “My Documents” (for non Microsoft Windows users, this is where all user documents and files are usually kept) has grown exponentially. I now have 1.5GB in My Docs. I used to burn my backups to CD, but each CD only holds about 650MB which complicates the backup procedures.

I now have a large amount of valuable data on the computer that took many man-hours to create. I DO NOT want to have to recreate it. I doubt if I could remember half of what I have already created.

I began exploring using an online backup service. In the process of doing the research, I read a good review about it in P C World (June 2, 2006)

The article picked these are the top services in order IBackup, XDrive, Acpana Data Deposit Box, Elephant Drive, Mozy. The article picked IBackup first, but gave mention of Mozy which is in Beta form.

I looked at the choices and I like Mozy. You know why? Mozy is free for the first 2.0GB. It costs $4.95 per month for 30GB. Before you read too far about Mozy, it only works with Windows XP so check out other sites if you do not run XP operating system.

To use Mozy, download the Mozy software and it takes care of the backups. It has an automatic feature the analyizes your hard drive and presents you with a back up set that it develops. You can make changes to the backup set as you see fit. It develops the backup set based on file extensions that it thinks you will want to back up. It backs up Outlook or Outlook Express. The backup works on files that are open.

Your first back up will be long (mine was over 24 hours), but each backup following that is incremental. It only backs up what has changed and it does that automatically. The backups are done in the background only when the CPU usage on your PC is low.

Here’s what Mozy says about itself:

* Is simple to set up

* Performs backups automatically in the background
* Encrypts all files on your PC before transfer
* Performs incremental backups
* Backs up only blocks that have changed
* Backs up open/locked files

Alternatives to Mozy (this is copied from the Mozy site)

  1. Burn a new CD or DVD every Sunday night and store them at your brother-in-law's office.

  2. Pay $200/year for an online backup service that uses old, mediocre software.

  3. Buy a $200 external hard drive and hope your office doesn't burn down.

  4. Do nothing and don't worry about backup. (We suggest closing your eyes, plugging your ears and repeating "I'm in my happy place, I'm in my happy place.")

  5. Run a cron job of rsync, gzip and mcrypt piped over ssh to your friend's server over his DSL line.

I highly recommend that if you do not have one, you start a backup procedure. It is not a question of if the day will come when you need the backup. The real question is when. Don’t be the one who says “I wish I had listened and backed up my computer”.

I recommend that you sign up with Mozy (
http://www.mozy.com/). Since it is free for backup under 2.0GB, you have nothing to lose. On the sign up form, there is a place for a referral code. How do I Print What I Am Viewing on my Screen?


Some readers may already know this trick so no offense to them.

If you want to print the contents of the screen that you are viewing, click on the Print Screen key on the keyboard. This does not immediately print the screen but rather, it puts a copy of the screen on the clipboard. This allows you to paste the image into another document.

Now that the image in on you clipboard, open Notepad or Word and position your cursor in the middle of a blank document. Right click your mouse and select “Paste” from the dropdown box. The image will be pasted into the document.

If the image is small, click on the image to select it. You will see small boxes at each corner of the picture. Place your cursor on one of these small boxes, hold down the left mouse button and drag away from the picture. This will resize the picture to a larger size. You may have to expand the margins of the document to really blow it up.

This is a handy tool to know how to use so keep it in mind for the next time you want to capture a screen shot.

John is working a hard pace this week trying to finish all that is necessary to list our first video on eBay. On the surface, it appears that all you have to do is list it on eBay, but that is the tip of the iceberg. See the article below for more details.

We had our first taste of fall this week with what we Texans call a “norther”. The wind shifted out of the north, and we felt a little cool wind for a while. The high for Friday was 80F. That is almost like winter!


Q’s , A’s, Comments, and Suggestions

From Volume 1 Issue 25:

Thanks to Ana for asking about a space being represented by “%20”. The “20” is actually the computer code for a space. The percent sign in front of the number tells the browser that the two digit number that follows is the computer code for a character. In this case the “20” indicates a space.

The reason we have to do this is because the specification for permissible characters in a URL is narrower than the specification for characters allowed in HTML code. A space is not a permissible character in a URL. If your bookmark has spaces in it, and it is used in a URL, the browser replaces the spaces with the “%20” which means a space to the browser.

Apache on the Internet is not an Indian Tribe

Statistics show that as of October 2006, the percentage of websites hosted on Apache server is 61.64% of all websites. Another interesting statistic is that in the October 2006 survey, the total number of websites reported was almost 98 million sites. This number grew from September to October by 1.08 million. Apache server is the leading server for hosting websites on the Net. Second place is Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Services) at 31.26%. Apache is open source software which means it is free. If you want to download Apache and use it you can do so.

Read the Wikipedia definition of Apache server. The derivation of the name is amusing. The logo for the server is an Indian feather which seems fitting for the name. However, the amusing part is that the development team that built Apache came from another server project. It seems that they collaborated on building Apache, and they did a lot of software patches to the server in the process. You guessed it! They called it “a patchy server”. Hence, the name Apache.

Both of the web hosts where we host domains use Apache server. The interface between you, the user, and the server is called the control panel.

I developed a video to take you on a tour (13:54 minutes) of the control panel for Hostexcellence.com. This web host is where Boomer eZine, Boomer Entrepreneur.com, Boomer-Guru.com, Backtracker.com, and John Howe.com are hosted.

The control panel gives you the ability to control your domains, set up email accounts, delete files from your web, add folders, set up password security on folders, etc. I will not try to list all the options that are available on the control panel nor will I try to explain all of the options on the tour. This is just an overview.

Listing a Video on eBay

Listing a video on eBay? No problem, right? Think again!

I know that all of you know Murphy’s Law – if anything can go wrong, it will at the most inopportune time. There are many additional corollaries to Murphy’s Law. The one that I am referencing is “Everything takes longer than you expect”. Such has been the case with this project.

Much of the extra work is because this is the initial video and the foundation must be built for all future video listings. Many of the activities will not be necessary on future listings.

Here is a list of the items that must be done or must be considered:


  1. The video must be recorded, edited, and produced. (This is really the easy part).

  2. The fulfillment page for distributing the video must be written and debugged. This is the page on which the buyer will land after the purchase to either view or download the video. Since you are readers of Boomer Video eZine, I am giving you this URL free so you can see how it works. LINK REMOVED 10-20-06 Please do not pass it around since it is for sale on eBay for $9.97.   3. In order to minimize support calls, develop an instructional video to show buyers how to view or download the videos. You can view it from the download page in item 2 above.

  4. Update the Boomer Guru home page to include the video in the video list.

  5. Update the Boomer Guru eBay About Me page to include updated information about video production and add a link to a form to ask for suggestions for topics for new videos. See the About Me page at http://members.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=boomer-guru.

  6. Write the sales copy for the eBay sales page.

  7. If you are not already a seller on PayPal, open a seller’s account.

  8. If you are not already a seller on eBay, open a seller’s account.

  9. Develop a loading video. This is the short video that plays as the main video is loading. The standard Camtasia video does not tell the viewer anything (shows the Camtasia logo) so I created a video to tell the viewer that the buffers on the computer are loading so please wait. This will automatically precede any Boomer Guru video and will reduce support calls.

  10. Set up an ASK database question set at the end of the video to capture any suggestions the viewer has for updating or improving the video and any suggestions for a topic for a new video. (ASK database will be the topic of a future article).

  11. List the video on eBay. This is a challenge with my firewall, since the eBay form has some active components in it. I have to shut down Zone Alarm (the firewall software) in order to not have problems with interaction with the eBay set up pages.

  12. Once the listing is live, log onto another eBay account (yes, you should have more than one eBay account) and purchase the item to make certain that all the functions of the eBay setup work correctly. Leave your self good feedback. (See below for more discussion on this).

  13. The listing is on eBay, but since the URL is time sensitive and will expire in five day, this link will only be good until 10/18/06. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290039247075&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MESE:IT&rd=1

Let me pass on some additional items I discovered during this listing.

The eBay input form allows you to enter detailed delivery instructions. I composed a paragraph explaining the buyer would be shown an instructional video on how to view or download the video, etc. When the live page was generated, eBay has standard information for a digital item, and my delivery instructions were not shown. However, when I purchased a video to test the system, this message does appear in the page that the buyer sees after purchase. If you want this as part of the sales information, put it in the section titled “File type, system specifications, or other requirements for this digital item”. Wow! That is a long title.

One of the powerful features of an eBay listing is the Featured Listing for an additional $19.95. If you choose this option, your listing is usually shown on the first Google search results page for your keywords. This is a great traffic generator. I discovered that Boomer Guru must have a feedback rating of 10 or more to use this option.

How do we solve this problem? Post the item and buy it myself using some of my other eBay accounts, call my children and ask them to buy it and leave great feedback. I will send them $10.00 for their efforts to pay them back for the charge to their card. I will be out the eBay listing fees on these transactions, but the 10 plus feedback threshold is important.

Another way to build feedback is go to eBay and buy inexpensive items. This is a way to get the 10 plus transactions quickly for not too much money. Perform an advanced search on eBay and enter $.99 in the upper and lower price boxes. This will give you only items selling for $.99. You will find a lot of them. Pick ones that you can use (and on which the seller has not put a high shipping fee) and buy them. Leave the seller good feedback and you should get the same in return.

Authors Note: When Linda proofed this, she asked me if buying my own product and creating my own feedback was ethical. That is a good question. It is a common practice to “prime the pump” and get the momentum stated on selling products on the Internet. It is similar to the question that if you are running for an office, do you vote for yourself when you go into the voting booth. My answer is “yes”. If your conscience tells you that you are selling a quality item, you jump start your sale by buying the item and leaving good feedback.

Another reason for buying your own item is to debug your eBay sale. When you buy it, you can take the transaction completely through PayPal and make certain that the buyer will be given the correct instructions and will get the correct link to go to your download page to view or download the video. You certainly do not want a buyer to have a bad experience when he/she has purchased your product.

Feedback is for both buying and selling. On eBay, when you look at the sales page for an item you are considering buying, you only see a number for the feedback. To determine if it is buying or selling feedback, you have to go to the seller’s detailed feedback page. Most people do not do the detailed research and accept the number on the main sales page without question.

Feedback on eBay is a life and death deal. You need some good feedback to show that you really are OK. Bad feedback will kill your business.

This had been a really busy week. As we told you last week, I (John) started learning Camtasia, the video production software. I became obsessed with it and in the end produced the first video production for Boomer Guru Productions (cheesy name, but it will draw attention on the Net). More about the video later in this issue.

While we were eating supper, we had a flash to use video as an extension of this eZine. We will incorporate video clips with the subject matter when it will help tell the story. We will change the name to Boomer eZine and Video Zine.

I thought that I might have coined a new word with video zine, but Google told me otherwise. There were over 10 million video zine topics. No original thought there.

Choosing and Hosting Domain Names

You will notice that we have created a new website named Boomer Guru for the video productions. John actually had the idea of Boomer Guru a few months ago. This came from the use of the word “guru” on the Net. You commonly see “Internet guru”, “eBay guru”, etc. We checked and found that the domain
http://www.boomer-guru.com/ was available and we purchased it.

As is our policy, we also checked for the domains around it and found that boomerguru.com, the-boomer-guru.com, and theboomerguru.com were also available. We purchased these also to prevent someone from developing a close copycat site. This is something to consider when you buy a domain. Always think defensively and protect yourself from a close “knock off” site. You need to decide if you want to protect the .biz, .info, .net, and .org extensions. We decided to concern ourselves with only the .com extensions.

When you have multiple domains, you can set up the main one and then set up redirects on the minor ones to forward the viewer to the main one. I use a particular web host to host the minor domains. This site will host unlimited domains for under $5.00 per month. I leave the domains there that are not very active. This is where the other boomer guru domains are that point to the main one. If you enter any of the previously listed minor domains, you will be redirected to www.boomer-guru.com.

The main domain for Boomer Guru is hosted with
Host Excellence at https://www.hostexcellence.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=jvwh. It is a first class hosting operation that we have used for several years. We currently have five active domains hosted there.

In summary, dreaming up a domain name that describes the theme or subject for your website can be a challenge. When you do find the perfect domain name that no one else has already found, protect it by buying similar domain names around it.

Producing Videos

I (John) really got into learning Camtasia and video production. When I get into a project and really get excited about it, it interferes with my sleep. I usually get up every morning about 4:30AM and work on our Internet businesses. I found that I was waking at 2:30AM and thinking about the video production. I enjoy the challenge of learning about something new, but I do not enjoy the wear and tear on the body while getting comfortable with the new technology.

I could not have produced this video in the time I did without the great tutoring that I got from the Mastering Camtasia videos that I bought from Chris Austin at
http://www.masteringcamtasia.com/cmd.php?af=490492. I viewed all of them one time through. Then as I started a particular step in the production process, I loaded up the video for that step and watched it just before I launched Camtasia. It cut my learning time by 75%!

All that aside, last week in the Boomer eZine (
http://www.boomer-ezine.com/V1I25_093006.htm), we told you that we were working on a video to show how to install Google search on your site. It is complete and posted for your viewing at the link below.

Turn your volume down a little at the start. For a one time fee of $37.00, we purchased a royalty free 15 second sound clip of the theme from “2001 A Space Odyssey” from www.musicbasket.com as the intro. We love the music, but it will blow you out of your chair if your sound is turned up.

The video is 16 minutes long so allow time to view it without distraction. It takes about a minute to load the buffers (cable modem) before it starts to play so be patient. Enjoy!

How a Web Page is Viewed

I sent an early copy of my first video to Tim Knox and Jim Cockrum, my mentors, and Jim sent me back a kind note. He complimented me on my video, but after he viewed my Boomer eZine home page, he had some suggestions for reorganizing it to increase the opt-in rate for subscribers to Boomer eZine.

I have read this information before, but it is interesting that you get so caught up in designing a page that you forget some of the basics.

The term that you need to search for on Google that addresses this subject is “eye tracking”. There are companies that do studies on how the average viewer scans a web page.

The viewer always starts at the top left of the page. This is the best spot on the page to try to convey something to the reader. Jim pointed out that I had the RSS feed buttons in that location. Many viewers do not know what the feed buttons are so that space is not utilized to its best.

I decided to reorganize the Boomer eZine home page and make a short video about the project.

A Blazing Bee Line to Hot Headlines... by Tommy Yan

When you're surfing the Internet, scanning newspapers, or browsing through your mail—you've probably discovered one disturbing denominator. There's usually nothing enticing you to read the rest of the content. So you move on.

And unfortunately, so will the prospects viewing your messages...

If you're an entrepreneur, consultant, author, speaker, or the Big Kahuna of your company—the most important marketing asset for you to work on is your headline.

Why? Because headlines have the power to draw people into your message. It grabs attention, creates interest, and can halt them in their tracks.

It's no surprise that people are busy and suffer from information overdose. You must stand out from the pack if your message has any chance of getting read. And nothing increases your odds better than a "go-for-the-jugular" headline.

Here are seven Quick and Dirty headline types you can use to draw people into your website, letter, media release, article, flyer, ad, or invitation:

4) The "Fear" headline: one of the most effective. Sometimes a benefit headline isn't enough. Some people won't take any action unless they stand to lose something. Let's look at a few...

5) The "Offer" headline: hits you point-blank. If you have an offer so irresistible only a moron would refuse—this would be perfect in your headline. Let's see...

6) The "Intrigue" headline: simply seductive. You give enough information to tantalize their tastebuds, but not enough to award their appetites. Ah...

"When dawn never arrived..."
"The seven year itch..."

7) The "News" headline: great for news or media releases because it sticks with the facts. Grabs attention immediately because of the similarity to media headlines. I got some...

With a compelling headline, you reduce the chance they'll skip your message and increase the odds of making sales. Which is why you're in business.
