Author's Comments

In our last issue, we discussed changes that we were contemplating to Boomer eZine in our second year.

Another change that we are considering is to rename the Boomer eZine. The reason for this - we get very little traffic from the search engines since “boomer” is not a high volume keyword. I just checked Wordtracker and “boomer” is 119 per day while “entrepreneur” is 648 per day. Multiply those numbers by 365 and you have 43,435 for “boomer” and 236,520 for “entrepreneur”. I hope you see the justification.

When we started Boomer eZine, I thought that the term “boomer” would be a good key word and would grow with the boomer population. Linda disagreed. After a year, I admit she was right. (She will enjoy seeing this admission in print).

Another consideration about the name: I think that many young entrepreneurs who could use the advice in Boomer eZine, click away when they see the “boomer” association. They wonder what a bunch of “old folks” could know. Little do they know that “old age and treachery will overcome youth and enthusiasm every time”.

We plan to start our second year with the name “Entrepreneur eZine”. We will continue to post videos as part of our offering.

We hope that this does not disappoint anyone. Our decision is purely a business decision.

BTW – Linda is visiting her Mother this week and I am on my own for this issue. Any spelling or grammatical errors are mine and mine alone. I wish she were here since I miss her company and I miss her support.

Q & A, Suggestions and Comments

Suzi from Australia sent an email asking if we knew about Lulu. Since we did not, I went exploring. What I found was amazing.

Here is the corporate profile as quoted directly from Lulu.com.

Founded in 2002, Lulu is the web's premier independent publishing marketplace for digital do-it-yourselfers. It's the only place on the web where you can publish, sell and buy any and all things digital — books, music, comics, photographs, movies and well, you get the idea. We simply provide the tools that leave control of content in the hands of the people who created the content. You see, Lulu is a technology company, not a publisher. So you can use Lulu to publish and sell any kind of digital content, and no one here is going to ask you to change anything. Ever. Your vision is entirely YOURS.

There is no set-up fee and no minimum order to publish and sell on Lulu. We manage the online business, including printing, delivery and customer service. You set your own creator revenue for each piece of content, and at the end of each quarter, we'll mail you a check for the creator revenues your content generates. Lulu makes a small percentage from each transaction, which means that we only make money if you succeed in selling your work.

Lulu was founded by Bob Young, who was also the co-founder of Red Hat, the world's leading open source company. We mention this only because, like Lulu, open source software is based on putting users in control of technology. In much the same way, Lulu believes in putting authors and independent publishers in control of their digital content, from content creation to pricing to royalties. Lulu simply brings creative content to the world and gives our talented publishers and web visitors the venue to buy and sell independent works. Publishing through Lulu leaves control of content in the hands of the people who created it. Pretty revolutionary, really.

What's In a Name?

For goodness sake, what is a lulu? Well it's not your grandmother's kitty, that's for sure. Ever hear the phrase "Boy, that's a real lulu"? Well, even if you haven't, we think of the word lulu as an old-fashioned term for a remarkable person, object or idea. And quite frankly, that's exactly what Lulu, the company, is. Think of us as an open marketplace for digital content. The web's version of a fresh air market. An on-demand publishing tool for books, e-books, music, images, movies and calendars. A remarkable idea, person or place. Most importantly, Lulu is you.

End of quote from lulu.com.

Suzi, thanks for sharing this information with all of us. This is a very impressive site. Take a look yourself at

http://www.lulu.com.

If you have anything for this section or you have a suggestion for a topic for an article, please go to

http://www.boomer-ezine.com/Suggestion_Form1.htm and give us your input. With your input, we can improve the Boomer Video eZine.

Make Your “Thank You” Page Work

When you fill out the form and click the link to subscribe to Boomer eZine, the click starts a whole series of events. A message is sent to our autoresponder,
Aweber.com. This triggers the confirmation email that is sent to you and at the same time, you are transferred to the first “Thank You” page on Boomer eZine.

Initially, on this first “Thank You” page, I had a message that basically said, “Thanks for signing up. You will receive a confirmation email. Please click the link in the email to confirm your subscription”. Guess what. Many people did not pay attention and missed the instructions to open the email and click the confirmation link.

I monitor our mailing lists in Aweber to see how many people are signing up and receiving the first “Thank You” without completing the entire process. There are many of these first entries that come from robots completing the form. Obviously, they do not complete the second step, but these are easy to spot.

The ones that concerned us were the contacts that looked legitimate and never completed the process.

I began to suspect that the first “Thank You” page was not as effective as it should be when I noticed that significantly more legitimate contacts were landing on the first “Thank You” page than were completing the confirmation process.

I began to ask myself why this might be. My thoughts follow:

They changed their mind between the completion of the form and receiving the confirmation email.
  • They had time to think, “Do I really want something more to read each week”.
  • They did not understand how the confirmation process works and did not know to open the email and click the link to confirm.
  • The SPAM filters put the email in the SPAM folder.
  • They just did not get around to reading the email and it died a natural death.
  • Other reasons????

In order to try to get higher conversions from the subscription process, I decided to revise the first “Thank You” page to make it very clear how to confirm the subscription and entice the reader to go ahead and complete the process.

I also explained that if they did not get the email, check the SPAM folder to see if it was routed there.

First thing that I did was to subscribe to the Boomer eZine myself so I would be sent a confirmation email. (I recommend that you subscribe to your autoresponder each month so you can test that the process works, the correct messages are being sent, and the correct web pages are being displayed. You never know when a small change on the page might disable the script on the page that handles the sign up form. (I have had it happen to yours truly.)

I used

SnagIt, a program to capture screen images, to make a picture of the email. I then used the editing tools in SnagIt to edited the picture. SnagIt has editing tools that make it as capable as Adobe Photoshop for marking up a picture. The good news is SnagIt costs $39.95 and Photoshop costs around $500.

With SnagIt, I added a big red arrow pointing at the confirmation link and put in BIG red letters “CLICK THIS LINK IN THE EMAIL” to draw attention to the link.

BTW,
SnagIt has a free 30 day trial. I used this option to test drive SnagIt before I bought it.

I then changed the message on the first “Thank You” page to stress the free copy of “Starting Your Own Business” versus asking if they wanted to subscribe to Boomer eZine. People like getting valuable information free and this will get more clicks than the offer of the subscription. The subscription goes with the free copy.

These changes seem to be increasing the number of people who complete the form and then go ahead and confirm the subscription.

You can check out the new web page at

http://www.boomer-ezine.com/Thank_You_Page1.htm

Learning About Autoresponders

In virtually every piece of advice you read on the Net, you have read that you need to build a list of subscribers and/or customers. That is not easy to do since people’s privacy has been abused on the Net and people are increasingly suspicious.

Once you get someone to sign up and you list grows, how do you:

  • handle the volume of transactions?
  • send out emails to everyone?
  • deal with SPAM complaints?
  • maintain the list when people opt out, etc.?

The answer is an autoresponder. I think that the very best one is

Aweber.com. This is the one we use, and they have a great system. They have been constantly improving it since we have been customers. They have a responsive customer service department. You can actually talk with a human being! They are even on duty on a weekend schedule!

Let me stop here and tell you that Site Build It has its own autoresponder included in the annual fee. We started with Aweber before we learned how powerful and all encompassing SBI was. We have not changed since what we are using now is successful. To quote the old saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

Aweber has a f*r*e*e test drive so you can learn how it works and see if Aweber is the autoresponder that you need to grow your business. Complete this form and take the f*r*e*e test drive. I encourage you to do this even if you do not need an autoresponder now. If you are going to build an Internet business, you will need one eventually. It is a good idea for you to understand what an autoresponder is and how one works.

To take the test drive, go to Aweber.com and scroll down to the bottom of the page where you will see the form to sign up for the test drive.

Tool for Writing Google Adwords or Yahoo Search Marketing Ads (Video)

When you write ads for your campaign, you must write ads of three lines each. These are the ads that you see at the top of the page and on the right margin of a Google or Yahoo search results page.

Google ads are 25 characters on the first line and 35 characters on the next two lines.

Yahoo ads are 40 characters in the first line and 70 characters in the next line. This line (called the short description) gets wrapped into two lines by Yahoo when it is published. Yahoo also allows a long description of 190 characters which is published on some of the Yahoo affiliate sites that allow for the longer description. This will not appear on the standard Yahoo ad on the search results page.

If you are creating ads, it is a pain to write them and then count the number of characters and then make adjustments when you are trying to maximize the number of characters on the line.

I suspect that there is a tool on the Net for this, but I created my own using Excel. There is a function in Excel named “LEN”. This will count the length of a text string in a cell. It then enters the count in the cell where the formula is located.

To explain how this works, I have posted a short video to show how to use Excel to help you write your campaign ads.

Click this link to see how Excel can help you write ads for your ad campaigns too. (Video is ten minutes long).

http://tinyurl.com/26ukkm

Once you have watched the video, click the following link go to the page where the Excel workbook download is located.

http://tinyurl.com/yr3hso

That wraps up our issue for this week. Until next week, stay tuned.

We are rapidly approaching the one year anniversary of Boomer eZine. It is amazing how fast time has passed and the issues have been published. On April 13, 2007, we will publish the first issue of Volume 2 marking the start of our second year.

We are planning to make a few changes. The first is to change the format of the text email to give article summaries with links to the entire article on Boomer-eZine.com instead of the email containing the entire article.

From our surveys, we found the vast majority of our readers are on broadband and industry stats show that the installation of broadband is growing at a rapid pace.

The main reason for the text email was to assist those who were on dial up. Now that appears to be a fading reason. We have surveyed some of the other top ezines and most of them are using this publishing format.

We are evaluating whether to continue publishing the eZine on blogger.com at http://boomer-ezine.blogspot.com. From our survey, very few readers use that location to read the eZine. We have not reached a decision on this yet.

Q & A, Suggestions and Comments

We received an email from Brian as follows:

I just wanted to bring to your attention that using the tag the way you display your email address on your boomer-ezine site may cause unwanted spam. You can read about it here

(URL deleted by author to protect the website location)

by copy and pasting this address into your browser. Please use this information to your advantage, you may have reasons to leave it how it is but I thought I should inform you.
hope this helps

Brian

I wrote Brian and thanked him for the great tip. I asked him if we could publish this in the eZine. He consented which generated an article in this issue.

If you have anything for this section or you have a suggestion for a topic for an article, please go to http://www.boomer-ezine.com/Suggestion_Form1.htm and give us your input. With your input, we can improve the Boomer Video eZine.

Launch of Jim Cockrum’s Members Only Site

Since you received my special email last Monday, you are aware that Jim Cockrum’s “Silent Team” website launched on 3/20/07.

It is being hailed as one of the major recent events on the Internet. Here is some of the feedback on the site forum:

"I've been looking around the site and I'm very impressed from what I've seen so far..."

"...thank you for showing me the light!"

"I really think this Members Only Site and Forum are absolutely wonderful!! I really appreciate all the help..."

"I am so glad to be a part of this!"

"...I got up at 2am to join and then went back to bed!"(11am launch here was a 2am launch Australia - sorry about that!)

"...I feel very excited about joining this group."

"What an awesome opportunity we are undertaking..."

Since I am on the panel of experts for the site, I admit, I am prejudiced. I think it is a great site which will be of assistance to all who are serious about learning more about eBay and Internet business.

If you have not yet taken a look at it, there is a video tour that you can take by clicking the box in the upper left corner of the home page of the site at http://www.silent-team.com. Take a look. I think you will be impressed.

Video on YouTube.com

I am proud to be an expert on Jim’s website. I am also an affiliate of the site. I recorded and produced a video to post on YouTube and other video sites promoting Jim’s new site.

We will not cover the details of producing this video in the issue, but all you need for what I did is to know how to use MS Power Point (not very detailed knowledge) and have a screen recorder. We use Camtasia Studio, but there are other video recorders that will do the job.

We will cover using video in more detail in future issues.

You can view the video at

How to Defeat the Email SPAM Robots

We all know that SPAM robots roam the Internet looking for email addresses in HTML pages. They are programmed to look for the format for an email address (name@website.com). When they find one, they record it and lo and behold, here comes the SPAM.

You have seem many people write their email address as (name (at) website.com) to fool the “bots”.

When you see an email link on a page that opens your email composer page when you click it, it is encoded in HTML as a “mail to” reference tag. These are encoded in HTML in the format (the “a” HTML tags are removed from this so the browser does think it is HTML and execute it).

href="mailto:email address">Display Text

the SPAM robots look for these “mail to” tags and harvest them also.

Here is the JavaScript that Brian sent to help us beat the “bots”:

To create a clickable "mailto:" hyperlink that is spam resistant, use the following JavaScript on your web pages.

This will result in a mailto: like this: Email me!

Steps to create a clickable "mailto:" hyperlink:

1. Copy and insert the above JavaScript into your html source code at the “mailto:” insertion point. Note: Some html authoring tools may require you to use an automated tool for inserting the JavaScript (e.g., Insert > Script Object in Dreamweaver).

2. Edit the script to include the user name and mail host.

For example, suppose email should be sent to
jdoe@andrew.cmu.edu.

Within the script, the lines that read:
user = "myusername";site = "myhost.com";

must be changed to:
user = "jdoe";site = "andrew.cmu.edu";

3. Save your html file. The JavaScript will generate a clickable link that reads "Email me!".

4. (Added by the author) - You can substitute whatever text you want the reader to actually see on the webpage for the “Email me!” in the script.

Spam Resistant E-mail List

If you must maintain a web page of e-mail addresses, restrict it to one page. You can limit the number of SpamBots from indexing the page with the following meta tag: "meta name="Robots" content="noindex, nofollow"

Most SearchBots, SpamBots & web crawlers ignore pages with this tag.

End of Brian’s suggestion

I have already changed the email address on the home page of Boomer eZine so take a look at the results.

Our sincere thanks to Brian for a really helpful tip.

Guest Author

I read the following article in “Site Pro News” and I thought it was worth publishing in the eZine. I have been on my “soap box” about using the “Web 2.0” tools for creating traffic to your site. I wanted you to hear it from someone else in a very well written article.

Gear Up Your Site For Social Media Marketing
By Deepak Dutta

The year 2006 saw the emergence of social media. If you are engaged in operating a website, you must realign your site to exploit the popular social media sites for increased traffíc.

You should also introduce social media components to your site because web users are experiencing these new forms of interactions on more and more sites and they may have an expectation of the same from your site also.

If you want to attract repeat visitors and want them to stay longer, your focus this year should be on the social aspects of your site.

Social media uses technologies like RSS, blogging, podcasting, tagging, etc. and offers social networking (MySpace, Facebook), social video and picture sharing (YouTube, Flickr), and community-based content ranking (Digg, MiniClip) features.

The central theme of these sites is user generated content used for sharing among the end-users. The social aspects of these sites are to allow users to setup social communities, invite friends and share common interests.

You don't have to change your site completely within a month or so to take advantage of these new technologies. Introduce small changes incrementally throughout the year and you will be on your way to meet these new challenges.

The first step is to declare who you are to the online community. People should be able to relate to you. Unless they know more about you, you will be just an unknown identity and most people don't like to deal with unknowns. Create an About Us page and líst your achievements and skills.

Create a MySpace page and link your bio in the About Us page to the MySpace page. Also provide a link back from the MySpace page to your website. Spend an hour every week to develop your online social network in MySpace. Invite a few of these new friends to write blog articles at your site about your products or services.

Install frëe blog software and start publishing at least one article in your blog. Provide an easy bookmarking feature to social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us. This is done by providing an action button for each article on your site. The action button takes users to the submission page of the bookmarking site.

Also, provide an action button for direct posting of blog articles to Digg. Digg is a popular news ranking site. A well dugg article will bring thousands of visitors to your site.

Provide a forum at your site for users to discuss your products and services. Don't delete negative comments because they provide insights into the improvements needed to serve your visitors better. However, censor hate speeches and meaningless bantering. Register your forum at BoardTracker. BoardTracker is a forum search engine.

If you are offering products, allow users to review and rate your products. This will help you in inventory management because you may want to discontinue low rated products.

Provide RSS feeds for your new products, blogs, forum postings, etc. An RSS feed provides teasers of your contents. Users will use RSS readers to scan your teasers and visit your site for more information if the teasers draw their attention.

Publish all your feeds at Feedburner. Feedburner provides media distribution and audience engagement services for RSS feeds. They also provide an advertising network for your feeds. If you have quality content, you will be able to monetize your content using their services.

Create short how-to or new product videos and post these videos in social video sharing sites like YouTube and Google video. Provide a few start and end frames in these videos to introduce your site with your site url. Post these videos using catchy titles, teasing descriptions, and appropriate tags to make them discoverable.

Provide embedded links to your posted videos on your site. This will save your bandwidth and storage space because the videos reside on the video sharing sites.

Besides videos, use social photo sharing sites like Flickr to share pictures related to content on your site. Use the same title, description and tag techniques discussed earlier for social video sites.

Provide a Send to Friend feature for all products and services you offer. This feature is a link that sends the article, product description, etc. to a recipient via e-mail.

For starters, Yahoo provides a service called Action Buttons that adds links to your website for users to share, save, and blog about your website. The Yahoo action buttons use del.icio.us for social bookmarking and the Yahoo blog site for blogging. It also has a print feature.

Social media is not a fad. It is here to stay and bring in profound changes to web surfers' experiences. It is the right time for implementing features that will make your site social media friendly. Also, using marketing techniques that utilize popular social media sites, you will be able to bring traffíc to your site.

Author's Comments

The majority of this issue is all interrelated since it deals with our changing our advertising program on Boomer eZine from Google Adsense to ClickBank ads.

The Adsense ads presented on the eZine seemed too general and did not properly match the topics of the page. ClickBank has great digital products which focus on the topics that are covered by Boomer eZine.

Also, the ClickBank ads have a better commission structure than the Adsense ads. There is a joke on the Internet that Adsense ads should be called “Ad cents” ads since the commissions are relatively low (in the range of five percent (5%)). In comparison, ClickBank products are usually digital goods whose commissions are somewhat higher.

Q & A, Suggestions and Comments

We had several emails this week about various topics, but the one that we thought was a subject about which many readers might need help was how to unzip a .zip file.

Excerpted from the email

…. I down loaded the off-line sales kit, have now got it on my desk top, however when I click on it, a box comes up and asks me if I sure I want to run this file, I say yes. I click the unzip button and it says it is running 29 files and back we go again! Again if this is an easy one, fine. If not no worries I can get answers here, it will just take a few days, I am a bit like a dog with a bone!!!!!!!!!!!

My Answer

It sounds like it unzipped it and put it somewhere. All you have to do is to find where it put the unzipped files. If you are running XP, right click on the zipped file. You will be given some options. One of those is “Extract to folder”. Click that and it will ask you the folder where you want the unzipped files placed. Tell it and click Extract and the files will be unzipped into the folder you designated. Extract is a fancy verb for unzip.

Jim Cockrum’s New Membership Website

An extremely exciting event happens on March 20 at 11:00 AM EST.

My friend and mentor, Jim Cockrum, the author of the all time best selling ebook “The Silent Sales Machine Hiding on eBay” is launching his membership website.

Jim has published a popular newsletter for years. The circulation of which is well over 100,000 subscribers. That is a LOT of readers.

Jim has made a career helping people get started and succeed on eBay. Many of his subscribers have wanted more information and more direct help with their eBay problems. They have encouraged him to start a membership site. Well, it is coming next week.

One of the most exciting things for us is that Jim has asked John to be one of the experts on his new site. We are honored that Jim (he is a charter subscriber to Boomer eZine) values the articles that we publish well enough to include John as one of his panel of experts. When you see the list of experts that Jim has enlisted for his site, you will appreciate why we feel honored.

If you are involved with eBay or you are considering eBay for your Internet career, this website is a must for you. I know that in past issues, I have recommended some of Jim’s books. I have recommended that at the very least, you sign up for his newsletter.

Well, now here is a website where you can get closer to the man and really tap into his genius as well as the knowledge of many other experts.

I encourage you to go to Jim’s site and look it over to see if it is for you.

You can get to Jim’s site by following this link. Jim has asked us to not activate the link until Tuesday, March 20 at 11:00 AM EST and we honor that request.

Switch from Adsense Ads to Clickbank Ads

We have not been pleased with the Adsense ads that appear on the top of each of the Boomer eZine issues on the Boomer eZine website. The ads seem to not be properly targeted to items that will really help our readers.

In looking around at various options, I found a software package called “ClickBank AdBox Professional” that will put ClickBank ads on your page in basically the same format as the Adsense ads.

I purchased it from $7offers.com (See next article for more details) and installed it.

It does require some computer skills to install but it has some amazingly good, detailed instructions with it.

We installed it in Volume 1 Issue 48 and it has worked well since its launch last week. We have been pleased with the content of the ads that are now appearing on the Boomer eZine site.

Seven Dollar Offers Website ($7offers)

I found this helpful site by Jonathan Leger. Granted, it is a sales site where all items cost $7.00USD. It reminds me of the offline world “Dollar Stores”. However, the items that I have purchased are quality items.

The link to the $7Offers website is

http://tinyurl.com/2vlnbw

We purchased ClickBank AdBox Professional from this site. This software places ClickBank ads on your website. You will notice that the ads starting with V1, I48 3-2-07 are different from previous issues. The ads are now ClickBank ads rather than Adsense ads.

As stated previously, we feel that ClickBank ads are much more closely targeted to the readership of Boomer eZine than the Adsense ads from Google. Plus the commission schedule is better.

ClickBank AdBox Professional for adding ClickBank ads to your site can be found at

http://tinyurl.com/2xvmcl

We also purchased a good article “1,000 Visitors in 24 Hours” for $7.00. This article was written by Jon Leger and explains how to use video (YouTube, etc.) to attract traffic to your website.

“1,000 Visitors in 24 Hours” can be found at

http://tinyurl.com/yr6ocz

I have been impressed with the value of the items that we have purchased from this site. In my opinion, the
ClickBank AdBox Professional package is an especially good value.

Color Detector 1.01 (Video)

On the Boomer eZine site we use a light gray, textured background. On previous issues before V1I48, you noticed that the background of the Adsense ads at the top of the page was white. I did not think that this looked good against the light gray page background, but I did not take action to fix it.

With the installation of the ClickBank ads, I decided to make the background a closer match to the page background. I tried several free programs that let you experiment with mixing colors, but none of them were a close enough match.

I then thought “Hey, I’ll bet someone must have written a program to tell you the color codes for a color on a page”. Sure enough! When I checked on Google, I found a few programs. Some were for sale and some were freeware.

Since I am going to use this program once in the proverbial blue moon, I wanted a free color finder. I went to Tucows.com (freeware site that you need to know about) and searched on “color finder”. I chose a program from Cosmin Software. It was very easy to download and works like a charm.

When you have the page on the screen that you want to learn the code for a particular color, start up Color Detector. It opens a window on top of the target screen. As you run the cursor over the screen, a window on the Color Finder screen will show you the color codes and the name of the color (if it is named).

I opened the program and ran the cursor over the background of the Boomer-eZine page. Guess what? The color codes vary from #F0F0F0 to #FBFBFB. I had to pick one color so I settled on #F5F5F5 (called white smoke). I entered that number into the ClickBank AdBox Professional template and it matches very well.

I am quite pleased with the match. I am even more pleased with the price that I paid for the help (zero).

I have posted a short video showing the operation of Color Finder. It is easy to install and very easy to use. If you need to determine a color on a page so you can match it, this is the way to do it.

Tucows.com

Since we mentioned Tucows.com in the previous article, let’s talk more about it. This website is a resource that you really need to know about.

Here is what Wikipedia says about Tucows:

Tucows (originally an acronym for The Ultimate Collection of Winsock Software that has long since been dropped) was formed in Flint, Michigan, USA in 1993. It is now based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The company is perhaps most well known for its popular website directory of shareware, freeware, and demo software packages available to download. A system of mirror sites are maintained to allow the traffic to the site to be distributed among several world wide server locations. Despite the name, Tucows contains software for many major computer platforms including Linux and Macintosh, and also older versions of Windows (most notably the Windows 3.x series).

The Tucows logo is two cows staring at each other. Additionally, their ratings system uses cow icons.

End of Wikipedia quote

If you need software to do some job, try Tucows and see if someone has invented it. If you are in luck, it will be freeware. What can be a better deal?

Author's Comments

In this issue we will discuss some websites that can help promote your websites or blogs. We will also discuss your opportunity to become an affiliate of Site Build It.

The websites are Eons.com and Squidoo. They give you an easy way to post pages about you or your sites to help drive traffic to your sites.

I encourage you to take advantage of these traffic building sites.

Q & A, Suggestions and Comments

One of our readers emailed that the links in the report that I posted, “Starting Your Own Business” were not live links. We exchanged emails and it appears that she is using Adobe Reader 6.0 which will not recognize the links as I published them.

I use a free program called “CutePDF” to publish PDF files. It does not have the full capability of Adobe Acrobat (and it does not cost in the range of $200). Apparently, CutePDF did not publish the links the same way that Adobe Acrobat does.

Adobe Reader 7.0 and 8.0 have the capability to recognize links and make them active in the PDF document. This option is selectable in the preferences. The default option is to make all links active.

You can download any version of Adobe that was ever released at
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?platform=Windows&product=10.

I recommend that you download the latest Adobe Reader so you have all the latest improvements in it. I downloaded Adobe Reader 8.0 (released 12/06) after this exchange of emails.

It is a large download so allow some time for it.

If you have anything for this section or you have a suggestion for a topic for an article, please go to
http://www.boomer-ezine.com/Suggestion_Form1.htm and give us your input. With your input, we can improve the Boomer Video eZine.

Eons – 50 plus everything

An interesting website that I found is
http://www.eons.com. It is a Boomer oriented site created by the man who developed the wildly successful job search site Monster.com. Eons targets the 50+ market and that means Baby Boomers. eons.com is a very popular site with an Alexa ranking of 14,819 as of this writing. Any rank number smaller than 100,000 is considered to be very good. (#1 is the top rank which is held by Yahoo.com).

You can easily register and become a member of eons. When you do, you can create your own home page, upload your picture, create a profile, etc.

One of the features that can benefit an online entrepreneur is the Groups section of eons.com. The link to this is
http://community.eons.com/directory/categories. Here you can see all the different groups that you might want to join and learn from the members. Leave links to your site or blog and promote yourself.

A nice feature is you can easily start your own group. This will give you more exposure and help build the traffic to your website(s). Remember that if you are building a reputation on the Net, you need to work on establishing yourself as an expert in the field that you have chosen. What better way than to establish your own group on eons.com?

The Boomer generation is well into the 50+ age group. The leading edge Boomers are 61 and the last year of the boom (1964) is now 43. This site could be a major site for Boomers so jump in and be there first.

I established a Retirement Jobs group a few weeks back. It has not taken off like wildfire, but it is established and I am the owner of the group. I will work on it to try to build the “critical mass” that discussion sites like this need to be successful. Please come join me at

http://community.eons.com/groups/group/retirement-jobs.

A site like this also builds links to your other sites which, as we have previously discussed, builds the page rank of your websites.

Another helpful feature is cranky.com at
http://cranky.eons.com/Cranky/search/home.jsp. This is billed as the “world’s first age-relevant search engine”. It is associated with eons.com. I do not consider older people cranky (now that I am an older person), but be that as it may, that is the name of the site. It is interesting to note that the number 5 search last year was “jobs after retirement”. Sounds like they need to visit Retirement Jobs Online.com.

A feature of cranky.com is the ability of the searchers to rate a website that the search finds. Favorable ratings will move the site up in the ranking.

Each results page shows only four sites so you need to rank high to be on the first page. When I first searched for retirement jobs, the retirement-jobs-onlinec.com site was on page two (in fifth place). I wrote a review of it and it is now in fourth place at the end of page one.

Check out eons.com and join with me on the retirement jobs group at
http://community.eons.com/groups/group/retirement-jobs. While you are there, please go to cranky.com, search on retirement jobs, and write a four star review of retirement jobs online.com and boomer ezine.com. Linda and I will really appreciate it. We work hard to create good content and we want others to enjoy it.

Squidoo.com

This is quoted directly from the About page of squidoo.com at
http://www.squidoo.com/pages/about.

A LITTLE ABOUT SQUIDOO:

Squidoo's goal as a platform is to bring the power of recommendation to search. Squidoo's goal as a co-op is to pay as much money as we can to our lensmasters and to charity. And Squidoo's goal as a community is to have fun along the way, and meet new ideas and the people behind them.

The following is quoted directly from the Squidlens at
http://www.squidoo.com/squidoo.

WE BELIEVE THAT WHEN YOU GO ONLINE, you don't search. You don't even find. Instead, you are usually on a quest to make sense.

That's the goal of most visits to Google or Yahoo! or blogs or Wikipedia. How do you make sense of the noise that's coming at you from all directions?

You won't take action, you won't buy something, book something, hire someone, or take a position on a political issue until you've made sense of your options.

Searching online should really be called poking online. Because that's what you do. You poke around. You poke in Google and you poke at some ads. After looking at a bunch of links and pages, then, finally, you get it. You understand enough to take action—to buy something or make a decision. The thing is, this takes a long time.

The Web ought to accelerate and even replicate that word of mouth phenomenon that works so well in the real world.

There ought to be a way to leverage the power of personal recommendation online.

There ought to be a way for you to talk about what matters to you, what 10 things matter to you, without the pressure of keeping it up daily (like a blog); and you ought to be able to make some money if someone buys something because you recommended it.

There ought to be a way for us all to benefit from what everyone else knows.
And so we built Squidoo.

End of quoted material.

I think that the name is a little hokey, but the concept is solid. You build lenses (web pages) that focus on a particular topic. The lens recommends a subject, blog, or website to the readers. This is a great way to point people to your site.

Squidoo is in the stratosphere of Alexa rankings with a ranking of 828. This means that any lens that you build on Squidoo stands the chance of receiving lots of views.

I built two lenses on Squidoo. One promotes retirement jobs online.com and the other promotes, you guessed it, Boomer eZine.

I tried to put the direct links in this article but Squidoo intercepts them and directs you to the home page.

To see the lenses go to the home page at

http://www.squidoo.com/browse/homepage. Then search for “John Howe” in the search box at the top right of the page. This will bring up the lenses that I have built and you can see what they look like.

This is nothing revolutionary. It is all part of Web 2.0 (Read about Web 2.0 in
http://www.boomer-ezine.com/V1I46_022307.htm

). It gives you a quick and easy way to promote anything that you want to promote on the Net.

If you have a site or blog and you are trying to build traffic to it, I recommend that you join Squidoo and build some lenses to focus readers to your site or blog. On the Net, every little reference and link helps. And Squidoo has a very high traffic rating.

Become an Affiliate of Site Build It

I have had a running email correspondence with Calum Nairn, one of our subscribers. We have discussed starting a website and various other ideas about starting an Internet business.

He wanted to know more about SBI, and I recommended that he become an affiliate of SBI. This permits him to view all the SBI instructional videos, read all the SBI literature, and read the SBI forum (which is one of the most powerful features of SBI). He can read it, but he cannot post to it.

After I recommended this to Calum, he jumped on it and signed up. (I admire people of action). Since I sponsored him, he is now a member of my affiliate team, and I am responsible for him. I will do all I can to make him successful.

If you have been reading the Boomer eZine for any time, you know that I am an advocate for Site Build It. I invite you to join my SBI affiliate team.

What are the benefits?

  • Access to all SBI information. This includes the written material and the very powerful videos.
  • Access to the SBI forums. The SBI owner’s forum is one of the most powerful features of SBI. You do not need a consultant when you are working with SBI. Just post your question on the forum and you will get all the help you need.
  • You can promote SBI. For every SBI site you sell, you earn $86.60 annually. You are paid this each year that your customer renews the website. That is an attractive commission.
  • You have an extensive library of supporting sales material and sales support.
  • You are on my affiliate team and I am responsible for your success. I will help you succeed.

Joining does not cost you anything. You do not have to purchase an SBI site or any SBI products.

To join my affiliate team, click the link below. This will take you to the Site Build It affiliate page. Read down to the sign up form. Complete the forum and welcome to the team.

Click here to become an SBI affiliate and join my team.

If you passed on this link, consider the following that is quoted directly from SBI:

SPECIAL TIP: Save 50% on your purchase of SBI!... Join the 5 Pillar Program (before or after you buy Site Build It! -- it doesn't matter). Refer a friend, relative or colleague, which is simple enough -- SBI! empowers anyone to build a profitable Web site. (Show your SBI! site... "YOU built THAT and get THAT much traffic?") Net outcome?... You earn an affiliate commission of 25% of the referred sale. And... you also earn a special, additional 5 Pillar Rebate of 25% of the referred SBI! sale. Yes, just for earning your first 5 Pillar Affiliate check... our way of saying, "Thank you and welcome aboard!" Hey, that's 50%! Even if you devote no further time to your 5 Pillar Business (naturally, we're hoping you do), it makes sense to join and take advantage of this affiliate-only opportunity.

Now I ask you, can you beat a deal like that? Sign up now. You really have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. That is a no brainer deal!

Click here to become an SBI affiliate and join my team.

I look forward to receiving the email from SBI telling me that you have joined the best company on the Internet today - SBI.

Don’t let procrastination cheat you out of this opportunity.

That wraps up our issue for this week. Until next week, stay tuned.

The Internet is a very dynamic place. What was a standard tool for years is now gone. The Overture Bid Tool was discontinued by Yahoo on February 12. When you follow the link to the tool, you get:

Gone

The requested resource

is no longer available on this server and there is no forwarding address. Please remove all references to this resource.

That is pretty final. Don’t you think?

Overture Bid Price Tool Has Been Discontinued

In several previous articles, I have written about the Overture Bid Price Tool. This was an extremely handy tool that allowed you to see the bid price for all of the Yahoo Search Marketing bids. Well, this tool has been discontinued by Yahoo.

This is logical since Yahoo has changed the way that it handles ad position in the Yahoo Search Marketing Program. Under the old program, the position of an ad on a search results page was totally dependent on the price of the bid. The highest bid was in the first spot. The second highest bid was in the second spot and so on.

Yahoo has changed the program so it is similar to the Google Adwords program. The location of the ad is dependent on a formula which evaluates the “relevance” of the ad. This takes into account the bid price and the number of clicks that an ad gets. An ad with a lower bid price that is getting a lot of click through traffic will rank above an ad with a higher bid and not much click traffic.

You can see that with this change in policy, it is not possible for Yahoo to be able to publish the bid prices anymore since that is not the only variable in the establishment of ad position.

This is too bad since this was a handy tool, and I used it often when evaluating a PPC campaign.

New Free Keyword Search from Wordtracker

Wordtracker is considered the ultimate site for accurate keyword search data. Boomer eZine has mentioned Wordtracker in several previous articles, but we have never done a full article on it.

We have used Wordtracker both directly and through Site Build It.

Twenty Wordtracker searches are included in the Site Build It fee. The Brainstorm It module of SBI accesses Wordtracker to get the keyword data for its work. I have not used all twenty of the SBI Wordtracker searches for my SBI sites. If you do use the twenty, you can purchase more searches through SBI for a very low fee.

I have used Wordtracker directly for some PPC research for Google Adwords campaigns.

Wordtracker had a free demo that you could use to do some very basic keyword research, but it was so slow and cumbersome that it was not used very often.

Well, Wordtracker has added a free tool and you can get 100 keywords very quickly and easily using this new free tool.

Check out the tool at
http://tinyurl.com/2bt8rr

While we are speaking about Wordtracker, it has a very good free ebook about how to do keyword research.

Free ebook from Wordtracker

I have read this ebook and granted, it is a sales pitch for Wordtracker. However, it will teach you about keyword research and how to use any keyword research tool – not just Wordtracker.

It is a little outdated since it still refers to Overture and Google Keyword Sandbox, but don’t dwell on that. It is timeless in the lesson that it teaches.

Click this link to read the book:
http://tinyurl.com/2kz4yr

If you really get into serious keyword research, you should use Wordtracker. The costs for Wordtracker in USD are:

· One year - $274.00
· One month – $54.82
· One week - $27.41
· One day - $8.22

You can do a lot of keyword research in a day. I have used both the weekly and daily plans before. I recommend that you purchase a day of service when you first start. From that start, you will get a feel of the best way to purchase it in the future.

At the very least, visit the site and read about Wordtracker at

http://tinyurl.com/282tfg

Google Webmaster Central

Are you aware that Google will let you check the last time that Google crawled your website (or any website)?

It is Google’s Webmaster Central at:

http://www.google.com/webmasters/

Go there and click on the Site Status Wizard to see the date that Google last successfully accessed your home page. It will also tell you if pages from your site are included in Google's index.

There are many other helpful tools available to you at Google Webmaster Central.
If you have registered your site with Google, you can sign on to your account and check to see if Google encountered any errors when the spider crawled your site. I logged on today to check. Guess what?

I am embarrassed to say that Google told me that I have three 404 Not Found links in
www.retirement-jobs-online.com. That is something that I am glad to know since it is a surprise. I did not know that I had broken links on the site.

I recommend that you go to the Google Webmaster Central and learn what it can do for you. Let’s face it. Google controls the majority of searches on the Internet. If your site depends on search engine traffic, you need to do everything in your power to make Google like your website.

There is a lot of information at Google Webmaster Central, so plan to spend some time learning what is available and how you can use it.

Guest Author – Charlie Page

We subscribe to many of the marketing newsletters published on the Net so we can see what is current and learn the latest “hot” item.

Charlie Page is publisher of the “Directory of eZines”. I have read his newsletter for some time. He always has good content. I especially liked this article. I emailed him for permission to reprint it in Boomer eZine so here it is.

Five Ways To Spot A Great Product
© Charlie Page
http://www.RealWorldTactics.com
------------------------------------------------------

Funny things happen in the Spring.

* Flowers bloom.
* Student go on Spring Break.
* Internet marketers introduce new products.

It's true, Internet marketers know that spring is
"prime time" for selling products - especially products
about how to do business online.

With so many products out there, and more being
introduced every day, how can we spot a GREAT product,
and avoid wasting money online?

Here are the five things I look for when buying
products. I hope this list helps you too.

===> Is It Guaranteed?

This is an absolute essential in my book. If someone
offers a 30 day guarantee, I usually won't buy. The
reason for this is two-fold.

1. If they won't stand behind what they sell for more
than 30 days, it really does indicate that they are not
in business for the long haul.

2. It sometimes takes me 30 days just to TRY what I've
bought. Like you, I'm busy. And the worst thing is to
be busy, delay trying something, find out it won't work
for you, and then get stuck because you had to wait.

Look for a rock-solid guarantee when shopping online.

===> Does It Meet A Real Need?

When I say "need" I don't mean a basic need like food,
but rather, will it help me accomplish my goals?

Sometimes there are products that help us accomplish
our goals by providing much needed information,
information that it would take time and money to get
otherwise.

Sometimes a great product is one that saves time. One
of my absolute favorite tools is ShortKeys. If you find yourself typing the same thing over and over, you'll love ShortKeys. Best of all, you can get it free at this link.

http://www.shortkeys.com/lite.htm

===> Is It From A Reliable Source?

Considering the source of a product has become a MAJOR
factor in buying things online ... especially when
buying information.

One example: There is a LARGE group of people pushing
"how to make money" products who have never made a dime
online. I know, because I talk to these people every
day.

Here are two quick ways to know if a source is
reliable.

1. Look at their sites. If they have one hyped-up site
that promises the moon, look out. Even worse, if they
don't have their own domain, run ... don't walk.

2. If you are concerned, or don't know the person, try
to contact them. How they handle your contact will
speak volumes about who they are trying to serve, you
or themselves.

If a site owner answers every question with "buy my
product" (or worse - doesn't answer) hide your Visa and
count your blessings that you found out BEFORE you
paid.

===> Does It Work As Promised?

This is, of course, for after you have bought, but it's
still a valid point. If you bought something that does
not perform as promised, don't just give up or get a
refund.

There are many products that will work like wings once
we know what they are supposed to do. If you don't
understand how to use what you bought, or have
questions, be sure to ask.

If you find it does not work as promised, return it and
find something else that will meet your needs.

===> Is It Cost Effective?

The trend among marketers today is to create ever more expensive products. Two years ago products often cost $47 or $67. Today it's not unusual to see $497, $697, or even $1000 priced products.

If these products deliver BIG value, then the price is
fine.

But for MANY people, $500 is an impossible amount to
spend.

Before you spend your hard earned money, take a look to
see if you really can afford it, and if the product is reasonably priced.

NOTE: Buying something today because it's on sale
today, even if you don't need it until tomorrow, is a
wise move. You really can find bargains online if you
look.

Use these five guidelines when you shop online and
you'll not only find GREAT products, but you'll pay
less too.

And that's a beautiful combination!
