Author's Comments

This has been a busy week. I (John) have been spending my Internet time working on a new classified ad for eBay, working on a sales page for retirement-jobs-online.com, expanding my affiliate campaigns on AdCenter, and writing this eZine.

By the way, I do have a full time day job so you understand why I am asleep before my head hits the pillow.

And I celebrated my 64th birthday on August 23.

"When I'm Sixty-Four" (The Beatles)

When I get older losing my hair many years from now
Will you still be sending me a valentine,Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If I'd been out til quarter to three would you lock the door?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm sixty-four?

When I heard that song many years ago, I thought I would never be 64.

Now I am glad that I am!

Google Alerts

We wrote an article about Google Alerts at in a prior issue of Boomer eZine.

Since then I have had alerts posted for the keywords “retirement jobs”, “SBI”, and “Site Build It”. I will add more as I want more information about particular keywords.

I strongly recommend that you sign up for the Google Alert program.

Here’s why

Things to include on your home page

When you design the home page of your website, there are certain items that you must include to get the best response from your viewer and/or from the search engines (SE’s). Let’s discuss these important items.

http://www.boomer-ezine.com/V2I20_082407.htm#HPAGE

Web tool – www.marketleap.com

This is a neat tool that I found this week. It shows the total inbound links to your website. It will show historical link popularity for a website in graphical form.

You can enter a URL and a keyword and it will show you where in the search engines the URL ranks for the entered keyword. Here is the report for
www.retirement-jobs-online.com for keyword “retirement jobs”.

http://www.boomer-ezine.com/V2I20_082407.htm#TOOL

That wraps up our issue for this week. Until next week, stay tuned.

We were threatened by Tropical Storm Erin this week, but it turned out to be a non-event. We went to bed Wednesday with predictions of rain starting at 1:30AM on 8/16 with winds in the 30 – 50 MPH range.

When we awoke Thursday, it was dry and dead calm. The storm turned north of us and drenched San Antonio, Austin, and Houston, TX. We received weather reports from two of our children who live in Austin and San Antonio.

We are now watching Hurricane Dean as it moves toward us. It is projected to hit the coast of the Western Gulf of Mexico (Mexico or Southern USA) sometime late next week.

eBay Classified Ad Wrap up

Please refer back to the article in
Volume 2 Issue 15 for the background on the ad about which I am writing the wrap up in this issue.

I started the test ad on July 18 and it expired today (Friday, 8/17) so this will be the final analysis. With four hours left to go, the ad had 168 visits. It was pulling in about five hits per day. The amazing thing was that it ended with 185 visits (17 hits in the last four hours). The surge of visitors in the last day came due to the following reasons:

1. The ad was a featured ad. This put it at the top of the search page for whatever search it fell on.
2. The default search sequence for eBay is Time: ending soonest. Since the ad was ending today, it was at the top of every search on the keyword “web hosting”.

Read the rest of the wrap up at

eBay Countdown

When I logged on eBay today, I was greeted by an offer to try a new eBay tool called eBay Countdown.

Here is what eBay said about the new tool.

Privacy Policy

Last week we discussed the importance of having a privacy policy for your website and a link to it on your home page (index).

Let’s look at what you need to have in your privacy policy.

The privacy policies that I studied had the following components.

I am posting two privacy policies for your reading. These are posted for free distribution. By using either of these or a combination of the two, you absolve and hold harmless John Howe, Inc. from any consequences from using this information.

http://www.boomer-ezine.com/V2I19_081707.htm#PRIVACY

I am not a lawyer so I will not make any recommendations about any privacy policies. Use your own judgment or pay an attorney to approve your policy. Just remember that it is important for you to have a well defined privacy policy.

That wraps up our issue for this week. Until next week, stay tuned.

Linda and I had a great time at the lake. We are tired and sore from paddling twice a day. Thanks to the miracle of sunscreen, we are not sunburned.

I had not seen Allison, our grand daughter, for a few months so we visited Justin and Mary in San Antonio on the way home. Allison is 20 months and has she grown since I last saw her. It was great fun to get to play with her and see how much she has developed.

We came home relaxed and exhausted. It was worth it.

We hope you had a great weekend too.

eBay Classified Update

Our eBay classified ad keeps on ticking off the views and the sign ups.
As of the writing of this issue it has had 125 views.
At this point, each click (including my own) has cost $.32. The ad has four days left to run so it should end up in the $.27 per click range.

We will continue to update you on the results of our experiment. The ad will expire before our next issue so we will report a wrap up of the project next week.

To eBay or not to eBay

Some readers have asked me, “Should I have my own website or should I just use eBay”.

My answer to this question is “Yes” meaning that you should have both. Each one can complement the other and the two working together can be a powerful combination.

Either eBay or your own website can be successful, but together they are a “killer” combination.

I recommend that you start on eBay.

Follow this link to see why to start on eBay and where you go from there

Privacy Policy

How many of you have a privacy link on your home page? I must admit that I do not, but I will soon.

I listened to an interview with a man who worked for Google and quit to become an Internet marketer. The interview was revealing about what Google looked for on a website.

Read more about privacy policies at

http://www.boomer-ezine.com/V2I18_081007.htm#PRIVACY

I am going to study examples of privacy policies in more detail and this will be the major article for next week’s issue.

That wraps up our issue for this week. Until next week, stay tuned.

Author's Comments

It is rewarding to see Boomer eZine mentioned on forums and blogs. This week Jim Cockrum emailed me to tell me that my name had been mentioned in the forum on his member’s only site at
www.silent-team.com.

I checked and Rita had cited an article from a past issue of Boomer eZine. Thanks, Rita for recognizing our efforts. We really appreciate it.

Q & A, Suggestions and Comments

I had several exchanges with a subscriber who lives in Costa Rica. He wanted to purchase Google Cash Third Edition using my affiliate link (thank you) and ClickBank would not accept his credit card. The card was good and all appeared correct.

He became very frustrated, and I did not blame him. He asked for my help and I dug into ClickBank. Here is what I found in the ClickBank FAQ:

Best Affiliate Program

SBI has the best affiliate program that I have seen on the Internet. It is called the 5 Pillar Program (5P).

Here is more about it from the 5 Pillar Orientation Guide.

The 5 Pillars are...

1) best-of-breed line of products to help small business owners use the Net successfully

2) high first-purchase commission

3) lifetime commission on all purchases by customers originally referred by you

4) lifetime commission based on the earnings of your entire team of affiliates

5) limited number of affiliates -- “too many affiliates spoil the program!”

The great feature about SBI is the high first commission and the repeat commissions when the SBI owner renews each year.

Read more about this great affiliate program at

eBay Classified Update

The eBay classified ad keeps on ticking off the views and the sign ups.
As of the writing of this issue it has had 86 views.

At this point, each click (including my own) has cost $.47. The ad has 13 days left to run so it should end up in the $.20 - .25 per click range.

The conversion rate this week has been poor, and I do not know the reason. This is a problem to address.

We will continue to update you on the results of our experiment.

Discrepancy in Google Results

I was writing an email last Monday morning to a subscriber in Alaska about how effective SBI was in creating search engine friendly web pages. I was relating how SBI helped my
www.retirement-jobs-online.com (RJO) move into sixth position on Google in about four months for the very competitive keyword “retirement jobs”. I stopped to check the current position of the RJO site, and I nearly fell out of my chair!

Retirement Jobs Online.com (RJO) was in second place on the search results page. I refreshed the browser and this is what I saw:

http://www.boomer-ezine.com/V2I17_080307.htm#DGR

Branding Your Own Name

I read an interesting article in “Entrepreneur” magazine titled “What’s in a Name?”

Personal branding guru William Arruda was interviewed and he said that each of us should buy the domain of our name. He said that this is how people will find us in the future on the Net.

My domain name could be
www.johnhowe.com, but someone has purchased that domain for the purposes of selling it to a John Howe who wants to buy it.

To learn how I solved this problem, go to

http://www.boomer-ezine.com/V2I17_080307.htm#BYON

That wraps up our issue for this week. Until next week, stay tuned.
