Linda is off in San Antonio helping Justin and Mary by babysitting Allison, our granddaughter. Justin and Mary sold their old house and bought a new house. They are moving on May 31 so Linda is taking care of Allison to let them concentrate on packing the house for the move.

Without Linda here to proof this for me, I am on my own. Oh, well. Here goes……

Q & A, Suggestions and Comments

Ana Young and I have had an interesting exchange of emails this week about domain names with several hyphens in them. This concerned the concept of “long tail marketing”.

Driving Traffic to Your Website

I wish I had created this list since it is a very good summary of what we have been writing about to create traffic to websites. I found this on the
Warrior Forum in a post by Justin Miche. Justin has a great sense of humor. Just read his number 50 reason.

Sizer

Sizer is a helpful piece of software that I learned about in the tutorials for Camtasia at

http://tinyurl.com/2rt2s4

To understand Sizer, read this quote from the Readme file on Sizer.

Sizer is a simple program that allows any window to be resized to predefined dimensions. This can be very useful when, for example, you need to see how a web page will look with different screen setups. Designing a page on a 19" monitor may look fine at 1280x1024 but not so good on a 15" monitor at 800x600.

Sizer allows you to quickly change the overall window size (not the screen size) to ensure that the page design works well at all sizes.

Sizer can also be used to set a window size accurately before a taking a screen grab. This can be very useful when writing product documentation and you need to ensure that screen grabs are the same size.

Sizer is very easy to download and install for helping you with the sizing of windows. You can use it to check the look of a webpage at different sizes. I use it for setting the window size when recording in Camtasia so all windows are the same size in the final video.

Download Sizer at
http://www.brianapps.net/sizer.html.

The Website Challenge

I was invited to join in some fun on one of the SBI forums this week.

AJ, who creates ebook covers, found a website that compares websites for their SEO strengths and rates one against the other. The outcome is a numerical score and a winner is declared. At the end of the contest, AJ chose a random number and the closest website score to the number won a free ebook cover. I did not win, but it was an interesting contest.

Creating eBook Covers

I decided to “dress up” the free report that we give to each subscriber to Boomer eZine by creating an ebook cover to show on the web page for the report.

I went to Google and used “ebook cover” for the search. There are many options for this. You can buy a package that creates the covers for you or you can pay a specialist to create the cover for you.

Read here to see what I decided to do.

Linda and I had a great vacation in Banff, Alberta, Canada. We actually stayed on Canmore which is just outside the park. The mountains were covered with snow and were beautiful.

I allowed myself 20 minutes each day to check email, but I did not respond since there were no emergency messages.

It was relaxing and we are ready to go again.

We are composing this issue of Boomer eZine on Sunday (5/20) so be aware that we are running past the normal deadline. We debated on publishing this week, but here it is.

There are three pictures posted on the website from our vacation.

Q & A, Suggestions and Comments

This is the answer to Mike from our Eons group (http://community.eons.com/groups/group/retirement-jobs) who asked how to drive traffic to his travel website at http://www.ytbtravel.com/136505.

Mike,

I have not been ignoring you. Linda and I have been vacationing in Banff, Alberta, Canada. I apologize for the late reply, but I told myself that I would stay away from the computer for the week we were on vacation.

I notice that you are using a site where you are an affiliate. This may be harder to drive traffic to than if you had your own unique website. Have you thought about creating your own website?

I do not know if you are a subscriber to Boomer eZine (www.boomer-ezine.com), but Linda and I have written many articles in it about driving traffic to web sites. My first recommendation is to become an author and write articles about your area of expertise. These will get circulated on the article sites and the links in the resource box (bio) point back to your site. I recommend starting with ezinearticles.com. I just checked and there are six categories on travel on that site.

After you have about five articles (the first article is the toughest), let me know and I will connect you with a man in Pakistan who runs a service to post articles to other websites. I send him articles and he posts them on over 100 additional sites for $3.00 per hour. He is honest and is very effective. This multiplies the links back to your site by 100 for every article that you write.

If you want to build your own website and not be an affiliate (or you could do both and use your own site to drive traffic to your other site), I recommend Site Build It. Yes, I am affiliate of SBI, but I am also a user of SBI for my websites. I practice what I preach (Talking about preaching, today is Sunday, by the way so I guess I can preach - LOL).

There are many successful SBI users in the travel business. They have learned to carve out niche areas in the travel business which you will have to do to get the search engines to send business to your site. To check out the SBI travel info site go to
http://travel.sitesell.com/boomer.html.

Mike, I invite you to become a subscriber to Boomer eZine. Much of what is written in it has to do with promoting websites and attracting traffic.

Thanks for your interest. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Sincerely, John Howe

Google Cash Detective – By John Howe

BREAKTHROUGH – that’s what I call it!!

I have been a big fan of Chris Carpenter for the last three years. He originally wrote “Google Cash” in 2003. That ebook revolutionized the pay per click (PPC) business.

Chris is a man who genuinely helps people on the Internet. His message is not “get rich quick”. Rather, he tells you in detail how to make money in the PPC arena. He shows you examples on how to do it. He tells you that you will have to work hard, but you will be rewarded if you stick with it.

Chris is in the process of releasing software to automate the process of finding profitable PPC programs so you can move into that keyword niche.

Chris sent the email about his new software to me as a member of his Adwords Mentor group on 5/17. Since we just got back from vacation, I just got around to reading it on 5/20.

WOW! Did it get my attention!

I downloaded the free special report from Chris titled “Google Cash Strikes Back” that you can download and read. It covers the history of the Google PPC business from 2003 to the present. Chris then explains the new software.

Untangling the World Wide Web

On the flight from Calgary to DFW, I read an editorial that Linda flagged for me from “The Globe and Mail”, Saturday, May 19, 2007. (Website -
http://www.theglobeandmail.com). I checked and you have to be a subscriber or purchase the article to read it from the website so I will summarize it for you.

“Untangling the World Wide Web” is an interesting article written by Christopher Dreher about the stunning innovations of the Web. He also writes that the patchwork development has caused some insurmountable problems.

Warrior Forum

I don’t know if you have heard of the Warrior Forum, but it is a well established Internet marketing forum. It celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Ten years on the Net is an eternity.

I recommend that you browse the forum. Join it and participate if you feel so inclined.
http://warriorforum.com/forum. There is a lot of good material on the forum and some heavy hitters frequent it.

We hope you enjoy this quick issue. Coming back from vacation on Saturday made this one a little late. Until next week, stay tuned.

My father grew up in the transition time between the horse and buggy era and automobiles. He used a saying that “a person was like an old fire horse” meaning when the fire bell rang, the horse was ready to get in the harness and pull the fire wagon to the fire. Stories are told about old, retired fire horses running to the fire by themselves.

When the publishing deadline for Boomer eZine rolls around, I am like an “old fire horse”. I can’t stay away from the keyboard to bang out a short eZine. Linda is not overly pleased since she wants me packing for our vacation in Canada.

When you read this, we will be in Canada. By the help of
Aweber.com, the autoresponder we use for handling our mailing lists, you will automatically be sent this on Friday evening, 5/11/07 at 8:00PM EST.

We wish you a great week while we are on vacation.

We are headed to Canada for a week’s vacation next Friday (5/11). We are undecided if we will publish an issue on May 11 and/or May 18. Vacations are for relief from work and eZines so we will see how it shakes out.

If we are inspired on some topic, we may publish a short one or report late on the vacation. Wait and see.

Site Pro News

I (John) am a subscriber to Site Pro News and find it to be very helpful. It contains some good articles about site promotion, SEO, and helpful tips on improving your website.

The negative – it is published daily and comes too often. However, I scan it quickly and filter it for what appeals to me.

We have published two articles from Site Pro News to date.

I recommend that you take a quick look at Site Pro News to see if the content appeals to you.

We have included a subscription form on the website version for your convenience. (We are not affiliates of this publication and make nothing from this recommendation).

The Best Web Host.com

This last week, I launched the new website, The
Best Web Host.com (TBWH site). It is a work in progress as is any website.

The mission of the TBWH is to help people match their website needs to the web host that best satisfies the needs of the website to be hosted.

During my time observing people on the Internet, I have observed that people choose their web hosts for the wrong reasons.

Read more about those reasons and The Best Web Host.com at

http://www.boomer-ezine.com/V2I4_050407.htm#TBWH

Blogger Law

We read a good article on the legal considerations of Internet publishing and blogging. Since we could not find a quick way to get approval to reprint it on Boomer eZine, here is the link to the article.

It is well written and is not full of “legalese” so you can easily read it and understand it.

Enjoy it at
http://www.avivadirectory.com/blogger-law.

Web Host for Dummies ®

Authors Note: I wrote this as an article and sent it to EzineArticles.com. I am including it here so you can see how to use an article to promote a website. This one obviously promotes The Best Web Host.com. You will also see information in this article that is similar to information from a previous article in this issue. Again, this is an example in leveraging content.

We know you are not really a “dummy”, but this phrase has become a very common expression meaning basic information for a beginner. Wiley Publishing, Inc. has built this “for dummies”® theme into a very profitable business. There seems to be a “________ for dummies”® publication for any topic you can imagine.

Let’s discuss what a web host for dummies® should tell you.
